About Us
Island Steel UK Ltd trades and processes steel in Wide Coil, Slit Coil, De-Coiled Sheet and Sheared Blank forms.
As one of the major importers of steel into the UK, materials are sourced from a variety of suppliers across the globe and are then traded or processed and supplied to our customers many specifications throughout the UK, the Republic of Ireland and occasionally to other mainland European countries.
The company has been operating since 1994 and in 1999, opened a purpose built 42000 square foot facility at its current port side location at ABP Alexandra Docks in Newport, South Wales.
ABP Newport can entertain deep water vessels with a capacity of up to 45,000 tonnes and in recent years has handled approximately seventy five percent of all UK steel strip imports.
The site has a prime location and is situated less than two miles from the centre of Newport and is just two miles from Junction 28 and four miles from Junction 24 of the M4. Excellent links to the national rail network are also available straight from the dock side.
The plant operates as a service centre for the processing of customers own materials as well as for complete material supply to a customer’s full specifications.
In addition to the main Newport site, the company also operates satellite sales offices in the West Midlands and Dublin.
Due to the steady growth of the business, in 2005, a new Georg slitting line was ordered and a new 38000 square foot extension to the facility was commissioned. The extension and new line were officially opened and began processing in January 2007.
The expansion has allowed the company to float between 40% and 60% capacity operating as required on day or 24-hour shift patterns.
2015 saw the company commission a heavy cut-to-length line enabling it to become a “one stop shop” for mild steel strip products ranging from 0.25mm to 6.0mm gauge.
From 2016 until now, extensive building work has seen the installation of the company’s first guillotines with an additional stores area and a purpose built, in-house maintenance department.
A second narrow slitting line was added in 2017, and the purchase of adjacent land allowed for the provision of a timber division enabling the production and recycling of pallets and packaging on site to suit any customer requirements.
With the signing of a long-term lease agreement, the company now has complete control over its entire plot of land and going forward, this gives the potential for growth of the current facility up to four times its current size.
Drawing on many years of experience within the steel industry, the company is proud to offer a friendly, flexible and professional service throughout.
